Chapter Seventeen

Victoria closed her eyes briefly as the doors sealed her fate.

The lift didn’t move. Nor did Seth for a long moment.

Without warning, he tugged her towards him so they were facing each other, jolting her out of her frozen state.

‘It’s a fair question, isn’t it?’ he asked.

His crooked grin almost undid her.

‘No,’ she whispered, then found her voice. ‘No,’ she repeated more firmly. ‘It’s not a fair question. It’s a downright sneaky question and you have no right to ask it.’

‘Really? I’d say it proves I’m a quick learner.’ His grin transformed into a wide smile, and if he hadn’t been holding her hands, she might have sagged against him in defeat.

‘No, you’re too clever for your own good.’

‘You still haven’t answered the question.’

‘I’m quite aware of that fact, thank you, Mr. Pierce. You don’t need to remind me.’

Seth’s eyes darkened to that stormy green-grey. ‘God, you’re gorgeous when you’re annoyed.’

Victoria released a tight huff. ‘Seth—’

He stepped in closer, and the words died on her lips.

‘Do you want me to kiss you?’

She stared into his eyes. They were watchful, and Victoria recognised the hopefulness contained in them. Perhaps if his expression had been confident or self-assured, she would have been able to brush him off. But his quiet patience was like the final blow in an enduring sword fight that had been going on between them for days.

‘Answer the question. Please.’

It was the please that did it. Not only was Seth a quick learner, Victoria was beginning to understand that he was also a master negotiator. Victoria couldn’t tolerate men who were pushy or insistent. But good manners would get him everywhere.

‘Yes. God help me, but yes.’

Seth’s eyes flared and his hand moved up to cup her cheek. He cast his gaze upwards briefly. ‘Thank you.’

She released a strangled laugh, but was quickly silenced by his mouth. Given all the pent-up tension between them, she might have expected his kiss would be demanding. Commanding even.

It was complete and utter bliss.

His lips tasted her gently, like he was savouring the finest cuisine. Slow and deliberate. She sighed, stepping into him, and his other hand came around to cradle her waist. She was ashamed to say she wanted that hand to be lower and firmly gripping her backside. Where had all her resolve gone?

It wasn’t only how he kissed. Oh, no. He tasted damn good, too. If she was a fine cuisine, he was a rich dessert. Decadent and luscious, and Victoria was determined to enjoy him.

She parted his lips gently with her tongue and deepened the kiss. He released a soft moan and pulled her tightly against him.

There. That was better.

She could feel the firmness of his muscles through his suit, and something else equally firm against her stomach. She traced her fingers along his neatly trimmed beard and wondered if it was possible to get high on that sunshiny scent of his which was currently infiltrating her senses. She dropped her hand to his waist and gripped it firmly, arching against him.
